Have you ever touched the edge of skin?
With this project, I wanted to touch open the steadly emergence of AI-generated content in our daily lives. Companies rushing each other to create even greater “reality”, challenging our senses of what is real and what is fake.
However, sometimes the viewer can find slight abnormalties in the pictures, such as irregular limbs, additional fingers and a weird feeling while viewing the image. These factors can help in seperating real from fake but how reliable are they really? How long can we still rely on our senses until AI-generated content gets to perfect to spot irregularities?
These questions inspired me to push the boundaries in fashion of what could be real and what could be a simulation.
I created 5 digital outfits for this project of which one is executed in real life. For my real garment, I set myself the goal to achieve a digital “AI-generated image” look with the help of digital print, layering, bioplastic coating and laser-engraving. I want to blend real skin with AI-skin and digital garments, creating a digital trompe l’oeil that alligns with my chosen brand “Y/Project”.
My patternmaking for this collection was largely inspired by a mix of AI-images and Y/Projects brand identity of playful, ironic and well tailored garments.
All outfits currently are in their mesh form (Colour and Print will be added throughout my process)
Since this project is a digital-fashion minor, we are working a lot with digital tools such as Blender, Clo 3D and Adobe Substance Painter. I am currently experimenting with skin textures on avatars and rendering them for my digital-print creation. I am also playing around with my red hard-plastic toy inspired shapes and textures.
Throughout my process I have also worked a lot with Midjourney, an AI-image generation software, in order to get inspiration and this weird uncanny-valley touch towards my design aesthetic. I find it especially interesting to start off with creating real image props and then mixing and merging them with other AI generated images. I also want to experiment using Blender Renders as prompts.
